I'm excluding the Switch from this conversation, because it seems unfair to assess it before it's really done. Not counting Color-TV Game (which didn't allow interchangeable games), Nintendo has put out seven distinct home console platforms. And it's true, Nintendo's history as a home console manufacturer is checkered with extreme highs and severe lows. Obviously any company with a history that long is going to put out some stinkers - and especially a company that is as wildly experimental as Nintendo tends to get, rocking the boat frequently in pursuit of new hardware paradigms, is bound to have some pretty acute ups and downs. Nintendo has the longest continuous history in the video game market, with home console hardware going back to 1977 - meaning they've been doing this for almost 45 years at this point.
